Verdict, Media Contributions, and Continued Education Amidst Adversity

Hello! As we step into a new year with optimism, we reflect back on the challenges of 2020—a year that tested our resilience and adaptability, especially for those of us engaged in public presentations and trainings.

A Significant Conviction in Tarrant County

In December 2020, Shawna Bieber was convicted in Tarrant County, Texas, for Criminal Attempt to Injure a Child, after repeatedly suffocating her 6-month-old infant. This case was particularly complex, as Shawna’s previous infant had died under suspicious circumstances. Despite Shawna having no criminal record and insufficient evidence to prove her involvement in her first child's death, she was sentenced to 12 years in prison. This outcome marks a substantial victory in our ongoing efforts to protect the most vulnerable. For more details on this case, see the following articles:

Expert Commentary on Sword and Scale

Additionally, I had the privilege of providing expert commentary on Episode 172 of the Sword and Scale podcast, which delved into the tragic medical child abuse murder of Olivia Grant in Colorado. The podcast was meticulously produced, offering deep insights into the complexities of medical child abuse cases. My participation aimed to shed light on the investigative processes and the nuances of identifying such abuse. Links to the podcast and related news story can be found here:

Educational Initiatives and Looking Ahead

Despite the challenges of the pandemic, we successfully hosted two full-day trainings at the Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office training academy for the local Child Advocacy team. These sessions, held in February and October, were adapted to ensure safety with limited attendance, receiving positive feedback for their depth and effectiveness.

As 2021 unfolds, we are gradually adapting to the predominance of online training, although I firmly believe in the superior impact of in-person interactions. With the rollout of vaccines, we are hopeful for a return to more traditional formats by fall.

Moving Forward

We remain committed to educating and training professionals on the front lines of child protection. Through continual adaptation and perseverance, we aim to provide the best possible training and support to those dedicated to safeguarding children.
